AUDITIONS
Are you interested in singing with us? Admission to the Halifax Camerata Singers is by audition, and we’re always interested in meeting new singers.
Who we’re looking for:
Prospective choristers are invited to contact the Artistic Director at any time during the year for an audition. In addition to filling permanent vacancies, we sometimes need substitutes for singers who are unable to perform certain concerts, or want to augment our roster for certain repertoire.
Interested candidates should have:
- Experience working at a high musical level, an innate sense of artistry, and the ability to read music
- A commitment to collaborating with others
- Inter-personal skills and willingness to follow respectful workplace policies
- Openness to exploring flexible vocal technique
- High levels of musical independence, with an ability to hold your own in a group singing space as well as to support other choir members
- The ability to commit to rehearsal and concert schedules. The choir rehearses from September to mid-June on Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30pm. The choir is also expected at all dress rehearsals, preparation sessions with Symphony Nova Scotia and its conductor, and occasional extra choral practices.
Auditions are conducted by the Artistic Director and an accompanist.
The 15-20 minute audition consists of:
- The performance of a solo piece in a musical style of the singer’s choosing
- Vocal exercises to demonstrate range
- Ear training and listening exercises
- An interview, with the opportunity to ask any questions
If you would like to audition or need more information about the Halifax Camerata Singers, please contact the Artistic Director, Joel Tranquilla, at director@halifaxcamerata.org.
