The Halifax Camerata Singers, under the artistic direction of Jeff Joudrey, is committed to commissioning, performing and recording music of Canadian composers. The Young Composers’ Choral Competition provides an opportunity for emerging composers to contribute to the rich body of Canadian choral music and to have a new work performed by one of Canada’s leading chamber choirs.

The competition is open to all Canadians aged 16-30 as of the entry deadline. Entries must be post-marked no later than November 1, 2010, and will be judged by a blind jury of musicians selected by the Halifax Camerata Singers. The winner will be announced in January 2011, and the winning composition will be premiered at a concert in Halifax in March, 2011.

top choral awards for Halifax Camerata Singers

The Halifax Camerata Singers have won the top prize in the 2010 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs.

The prestigious Healey Willan Grand Prize is awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts for the best performance and overall musicianship, technique and program. The award was presented to Camerata's artistic director, Jeff Joudrey, at the Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) biannual conference, held May 20-23, 2010 in Saskatoon.

Camerata also placed first in the mixed voice chamber choir category, winning against finalists L'Ensemble Vocal Ste-Anne Singers of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC and St. Bamabas Choir, Ottawa. Camerata was the only Nova Scotia choir to make it to the finals in the competition.
